PERU 2017-Post 19 pm. The Guinea Pig Experience

Sunday July 16 afternoon

This post is not suitable for vegans, vegetarians or people who love cute fury little pets! 


Arequipa is famous for its fine Peruvian dishes so a visit is not complete unless one samples the local fare.

The restaurant. 

The kitchen. 

And what is on the menu?

Amongst many fine dishes is the famous cuy (guinea pig).

Maria, Ruth's mom. 

A jug if the local red corn beer. 

We loved it. It tasted like sangria.

Maria had a little bowl of soup. 

Paul and Ruth, beef rice and potatoes. 

Ayako had the adobo and Hector a massive plate of deep fried pork. 

So many fine dishes to choose from... but we already knew what to order...

Yes, the cuy, deep fried guniea pig. 

With papa (potato), corn and salad.

 
You guessed it.  It tasted like deep fried chicken! 

Large enough to serve 2. 

We certainly did eat the whole thing...


With the exception of the head, which Paul and Ruth happily devoured. 

Does that make us real Peruvians???

Another photo opportunity with the mountain and another queso helado.

Ayako and Hector. Just married two months ago. Imagine the locals seeing Ayako in her kimono. 

We also got to witness a typical Maria worship procession with live music and a motorbike police escort. 
 


Beautiful Arequipa, the city in the desert. 

We really enjoyed our time here. 

Thanks to our loving and generous hosts, Paul and Ruth. 
And Hector and Ayako.


But the time had come for us to move on. 


Next stop, Nazca.

    Brave meal choice. But when in Peru hey. You are there to explore after all :) great pics, enjoying the updates
